We've got huge momentum for credit card reform, but we have to push hard right now to turn that momentum into a real victory. Both the House and Senate will move bills THIS WEEK!
By April 1st, most Americans will see a small increase in pay. Lawmakers hope we will spend that money on the goods and services that create jobs. But unless we pass legislation, you may need that money to pay higher credit card rates and fees. The banks have their hand in our pockets again!
That's why we are asking that you take two or three minutes right now to make a quick phone call to your Senators using our toll free call-in number.
- You and people like you have sent more than 400,000 messages to Congress in just the first few weeks of this year urging real credit card reform--because you know that credit card reform is an economic imperative for all of us.
- The personal stories you shared with us fueled a steady stream of new reports in USA Today and other major papers.
- Pushing even harder, Consumers Union's Action Fund is about to launch radio ads encouraging even more people to join the campaign--people in key districts where we need a strong Yes in the Senate.
- We delivered a strong and urgent message to the administration, and the world heard President Obama emphasize the importance of common sense rules for the card companies on Jay Leno.
President Obama told Leno, "Most of the stuff that got us into trouble was perfectly legal. And that's a sign of how much we need to change our laws. It's legal to charge somebody 30% on their credit card and charge fees and so forth that people don't always know what they are getting into. So the answer is to deal with those laws in a way that gives the average consumer a break."
We couldn't agree more. Take a moment right now to urge your Senators to vote for credit card reform.
Bills need to pass right now so that American families can spend their money on the goods and services that will create jobs and bring back our economy. If the banks have their way, they will continue to raise rates and take as much money out of our pockets as they possibly can for as long as they can.
We shouldn't be paying over and over again for the mistakes of bankers and Wall Street. Your phone call today could be the thing that finally brings real victory and real reform to help responsible card holders everywhere.
Sincerely,
Pam Banks
